7 tips to fit running into your workweek

Balancing work, life, and marathon training can feel like running a race before you even hit the starting line. But just like in running, success comes from pacing yourself, setting goals, and prioritizing what matters most. Whether you’re preparing for the Zurich Marathon or simply trying to make running a consistent part of your busy life, here are some practical tips to help you stay on track.

1. Make running non-negotiable

Treat your runs as appointments you can’t cancel. Block time in your calendar—whether it’s an early morning jog, a lunchtime sprint, or an evening wind-down run—and commit to it. Building this habit will not only improve your running but also help you maintain consistency in other areas of your life.

2. Use running as your well-being session

Running is one of the best ways to clear your mind and de-stress. After a long day or a tough meeting, hitting the pavement can give you a fresh perspective and an emotional reset. It’s also a great time to brainstorm ideas—some of the best solutions come when you let your thoughts flow during a run.

3. Set goals—and celebrate small wins

Training for a marathon requires setting milestones, like completing a long run or shaving a few seconds off your pace. Apply the same approach as you apply at work: break big tasks into smaller steps, celebrate progress, and stay motivated.

4. Find your rhythm

Pair shorter runs with busy days and save longer runs for weekends when you can dedicate more time. The same method as you use durin your workweek—plan ahead and set realistic priorities.

5. Prioritize rest and recovery

Rest days are as important as training days. Overdoing it in running can lead to injury, just as overworking can lead to burnout. Be mindful of your limits and give yourself permission to rest and recharge when needed. Sleep, stretching, and proper nutrition are non-negotiable for both peak performance and overall health.

6. Turn commuting into training

If your schedule is tight, try incorporating running into your commute. Whether it’s running all or part of the way to work, this multitasking hack helps you train while freeing up more time for yourself.

7. Join a community

Running doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Join a local running group or connect with co-workers who share your passion. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people creates accountability, keeps training fun, and builds camaraderie.
